But this isn't what this earthcache is about, if you look across the ravine you will see an outcropping of rock and this is what we will focus on today.
Strike and Dip
Are a couple of the terms that geologist use to describe the orientation of rock layers.
We describe this layer as dipping to the right, because that’s the direction it’s tilted downwards toward. We measure the dip as the angle between the layer and horizontal.
Draw a horizontal line across that layer— that’s what we call the “strike”.

So what we are going to try and do here is find the strike and dip using the information above.
Draw a vertical line through the rocks this will be the strike line.
Using the right hand rule above find the direction of the strike line, thumb points in the direction of line – what is it north, south, east or west?
Now let's try to find the direction of the dip, paper and pencil may help with this, draw your strike line on the paper, now draw the angle of the rock that you see across the ravine across your strike line, using the compass points tell me which direction the dip is going in.
Now to claim this earthcache all you need to do is:
1-Email me the Name and GC #
2-Direction of the strike line.
3-Direction of the dip.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and checking this area out, hope you enjoyed your visit.
