Himalayan Balsam is an invasive species, introduced to England in 1839. The aggressive seed dispersal, coupled with high nectar production which attracts pollinators, often allows the Himalayan Balsam to outcompete native plants. This meant that within ten years of introduction, it had escaped the confines of cultivation and begun to spread along the river systems of England.
The Friends of Manor Park group are trying to control the weed in areas of the park, and would be very grateful for any help we can give them. We'll be tackling it in the woodland to the north of the park, as well as along parts of the river, so please dress accordingly (boots/wellies, gloves and anything else you deem necessary).
Children are welcome to come along to help, but parents/guardians are to be responsible for them during the event.
Car parking is available at the posted co-ordinates, signposted from the main A57 which runs through Glossop. The park is also served by bus stops nearby.
