event.
Hoye-Crest is a summit along Backbone Mountain just inside of
Garrett County, Maryland. It is the highest point in Maryland at an
elevation of 3,360 feet (1,020 m).
The location, named for Captain Charles Hoye of the Garrett County
Historical Society, has a marker and offers a view of the North
Branch Potomac River valley to the east. The location is accessible
via a path leading from U.S. Route 219 to the west.
There is no direct road access to Hoye-Crest. The best route is a
hike in from a point along U.S. Route 219 just south of Silver
Lake, West Virginia. From here, you can begin ascending Backbone
Mountain along an old road and hiking trail on Monongahela National
Forest property that goes up to the West Virginia-Maryland state
line. From this point, you can head north along the state line. DO
NOT ACCESS THIS CACHE FROM ANY OTHER ROUTE!! GPS routing software
may give inaccurate directions. Park on US 219 at the parking
coordinates, please.
Hoye Crest may soon get Maryland's "seal of approval." For nearly
60 years, maps have shown the local landmark as being the state's
highest peak. But, apparently, that's not an official
opinion.
So, Sen. George Edwards and Del. Wendell Beitzel have introduced
legislation in this year's Maryland General Assembly session that
would "officially designate" the 3,360-foot peak as the highest
point.
"Maryland has a lot of symbols," Edwards said, "and this
[legislation] puts Hoye Crest into that category."
He added, however, that most people don't know about the
site.
"Most just think of Backbone Mountain as being the highest point in
Maryland, but that's not correct," the senator said.
Hoye Crest is actually located on the Backbone Mountain ridgeline
about 15 miles south of Oakland near the West Virginia border.
Should the local lawmakers' bills be approved by the General
Assembly and governor, it will finally be official on Oct. 1: Hoye
Crest is the highest point in Maryland.
