A ROYAL HORNY YARN Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Eureka Gold: As this cache keeps appearing on the DNF register, and we now no longer come up to Barham, it has been decided to disable this cache permanently.
A check this morning (29/4/19) revealed the work by the volunteer crew that built the beautiful board walk alongside the Murray River has accidentally removed the cache from the hiding place.
It will require a 600 km round trip from Home to come to Barham, a place that my employment has been bring me to for the past 16 years and 1329 return trips.
It has been a great time having the cache here, and there has been numerous finds, but as stated, due to current circumstances, it will be impossible to service this cache.

The yarn so far...................

It was a stinking 38 degrees while enjoying an ice cold beer at the bar of the Royal Hotel in Barham that I got talking to an old bloke known in the area as "Which Way Creek Jackie Jackie". Jack to his mates. Jack was a 1900's boy drover running mobs of cattle between Perricoota Station and Barham. It was on one such drive along the banks of the Murray River that a steer broke away un-noticed from the mob and was left behind.

It would be a month before Jack returned and it was within this time Jack believes that the steer and the big Murray River cod became close, (really, really close.)

On Jack's return journey, he rounded what is known as Nursery Bend and noticed the steer pushing the cod from a waterhole which was evaporating with the continuing drought to the safety of the flowing river. Jack was amazed as the cod swam around the steer as if saying goodbye to each other. As years went by stories of nets torn apart, hooks stripped from the wire traces and snags that resembled horns were rife around the district.

It wasn't until a Riverboat captain heading to Echuca experienced trouble with one of his paddle wheels and on inspection noticed Horney an entangled mess. Eager to share his remarkable find, he went to the first hotel (The Royal) to only be ridiculed and called a hoax and sent packing leaving Horney's mangled body behind. There was only one person that didn't laugh at him that day, and can you guess who?

So Jack finished the last of his beer and gave me a wink before saying goodbye. It was then that Len the barman came up to me, "Mate, can you believe that story? I think it's a load of Cod's Wallop".

You be the judge..........
