Known by many at the time simply as "The Pony," the Pony Express remains a dashing symbol of the Old West in America.
The exploitation of the Pony Express and America's western frontier began late in the 19th century with the flood of romanticized Wild West shows and dime novels. From the Wild West shows and dime novels to contemporary motion pictures and television programs, the Pony Express has supplied drama, excitement, and a good deal of fantasy.
In operation from April 1860 to October 1861, the Pony Express provided the quickest transit for letters and news between St. Joseph, Missouri, and San Francisco, California. It was established to keep information flowing between California and the federal government in Washington until the transcontinental telegraph was completed.æ
As a business venture, the Pony Express was a failure. It lasted only 19 months. But a century and a quarter later, it still fascinates the world as an example of good old American determination and know-how.
This is a "locationless" cache! To claim this find you must:
1) Locate and photograph a monument or memorial to the Pony Express, be it a stone or a mural or a roadside sign.
2) The standard locationless cache rules apply: a photo of the goal and one of your GPS unit - no vacation photos or web downloads will be accepted.
3) Include the coordinates of the location and the name of the city or town in your log.
4) Feel free to include as much history as you'd like. Educate us!
Please, only one "find" per geocacher, and each monument can be logged only once.
The coordinates given are those of a monument commemorating a supplemental stop here in my hometown of Vacaville, CA. Originally "The Pony" was to meet a steamer in Sacramento to continue on to San Francisco, but occasionally connections were missed or the weather was bad. The the riders would continue overland the remaining 100 or so miles. This marker and mural commemorate the handful of times they came through our burg,
