František Xaver Messerschmidt sa narodil na juhozápade Nemecka, jeho matka pochádzala z významného rezbárskeho rodu Straubovcov. Franz sa najskôr školil u svojich strýkov v Mníchove a Grazi a vzdelanie si dokončil na Akadémii výtvarných umení vo Viedni. Svojou ranou tvorbou, prikláňajúcou sa už ku klasicizmu, zaujal aj viedenský cisársky dvor, pre ktorý vytvoril niekoľko portrétov. Jeho fanúšikom a objednávateľom bol taktiež Albert Saský, významný zberateľ umenia a zakladateľ galérie Albertina.
Messerschmidt mal v roku 1774 nahradiť svojho bývalého profesora Jakoba Schletterera na Akadémii výtvarných umení vo Viedni, profesorský zbor ho však nechal penzionovať pre jeho zdravotný stav a občasné „pomätenie mysle“. S návrhom rady akadémie súhlasila aj cisárovná a Messerschmidt sa ocitol na okraji spoločnosti už ako tridsaťosemročný.
Viedeň opustil v roku 1775 a najprv namieril do svojho rodiska, kde istý čas žil v osamotenej chate nad mestom. Následne pôsobil v Mníchove, kde sa mu však pravdepodobne veľmi nedarilo, keďže v auguste roku 1777 prijal pozvanie svojho brata Jána Adama (taktiež sochára) do Bratislavy. Spočiatku bývali bratia Messerschmidtovci spolu v Jánovom dome na dnešnom Námestí SNP. Ich spolužitie ale nebolo jednoduché a tak sa Franz presťahoval do vlastného domu v štvrti Zuckermandel.
Po smrti F. X. Messerschmidta sa v jeho dome našlo šesťdesiatdeväť búst z rôznych materiálov. Táto zrejme neukončená séria diel čoskoro vyvolala záujem okolia a stala sa zdrojom rôznych dohadov a legiend. Pozadie vzniku netradičných Charakterových hláv sa dlho spájalo so psychickou chorobou, ktorou mohol trpieť ich autor. Objavili sa aj ďalšie interpretácie naznačujúce, že by mohlo ísť o iné psychické poruchy, prípadné viacero chorôb súčasne (napr. aj Crohnovu chorobu).

Zuckermandel síce bol kedysi zrejme krajší, historickejší, no postupne sa ráz tejto štvrti mení a pribudli stavby, ktoré sa nám možno až tak nepozdávajú. Okrem iného tu bol však vybudovaný aj oddychový priestor a v rámci neho boli v roku 2017 osadené na námestíčku aj niektoré charakterové hlavy.

František Xaver Messerschmidt was born in the southwest Germany. Franz first trained with his uncles in Munich and Graz and completed his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. With his early work, already leaning towards classicism, he also attracted the attention of the Viennese imperial court for which he created several portraits. His fan and client was also Albert Saský - a major art collector and founder of the Albertina Gallery.
Messerschmidt was to replace his former professor Jakob Schletterer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1774 but the faculty had him retired due to his health and the occasional "confusion of the mind". The Empress also agreed with the proposal of the Academy Council and Messerschmidt became socially marginalised at the age of thirty-eight.
He left Vienna in 1775 and first headed to his birthplace where he lived for a time in a cottage above the city. Then he worked in Munich, where he probably did not succeed, as in August 1777 he accepted the invitation of his brother Ján Adam (also a sculptor) to Bratislava.
The Messerschmidt brothers lived together in Ján's house on today's SNP Square. However, their coexistence was not easy so Franz moved to his own house in the Zuckermandel.
After the death of F. X. Messerschmidt, sixty-nine busts of various materials were found in his house. This apparently unfinished series of works soon aroused the interest and became a source of various theories and legends.
The background of the origin of non-traditional Character's heads has long been associated with a mental illness that their author may have suffered from. Other interpretations have also emerged suggesting that these may be other mental disorders, possibly several diseases at the same time (eg Crohn's disease).
