West Texas Ghost Town Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Thot: I guess it's time for this one to go. I can no longer maintain it and my friend who had a cabin in Fort Davis is gone.

Geocache Description:

Shafter, Texas -- Ghost Town

Attention:  Shafter has become less of a ghost town.  In the spring 2011, they reopened the mine - there are more than 100 workmen there now.

This is one in a set of Thot's Micro-Virtuals. A cache used simply as a device to lead you to this place.   You do not have to cross the fence to do this cache.

On the way to Presidio, while touring far west Texas, I visited this ghost town.

Shafter was once a silver mine and silver smelter.  A few people still live around here, but the town itself died after silver mining and thus the smelter were abandoned in 1942.  The town was used for early scenes of the 1968 science fiction movie "The Andromeda Strain".  I was surprised there wasn't a cache here.

Perhaps as interesting as the ruins of the old smelter (above and left) are two cemeteries.  To visit the cemeteries go south-south east on the road near the cache location -- go about a mile and turn left.  At the next intersection you will come to the first cemetery.  If you continue on the same road you will go to the second.  At the second there's a small museum I think is always open.

Pictures are of the silver smelter ruins.
