Tour de Laumeier Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

RGS: It is with regrets that I have to archive this cache. I checked on the cache today and it is missing again. Having replaced the cache 4 times (twice as a Rubbernmaid container and twice as a micro), I'm giving in. The cache location is perfect, but it also attracks the kids. There are still 3 other caches in this park to guide you around.

Geocache Description:

Do this one in conjunction with "Some Disassembly Required" .Quoting from the Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor web site, "In 1977, the City of Sunset Hills Board of Alderman stated that the sculpture at Laumeier belonged in a nearby auto salvage yard." They were, of course, refering to Murphy's Junkyard on Old Watson.

****June 6, 2003****

Since the original cache was destroyed the middle of February, I've replaced it with a micro (35mm film container containing a log sheet and 2 pencils) in the same location as the original. Now that one has been destroyed, I've replaced it again with another micro.

We all have our ideas of art, and some here are very abstract, while other, I think, are very unique and interesting. This is a tour of the 98 acre park of some I found interesting. ALL are in open, cut grass areas or on a trail. No bushwacking is required. Shorts and tennis shoes are appropriate.

The coordinates above point to the parking area. Free maps of the park were available but now cost $1.00 and only available in the gift shop.
A copy of the Park Map is attached for the approximate location of the needed exhibits.

I have removed the picture and necessary dates for Cromlech Glen, since it is still under renovation, and replaced it with Pool Complex: Orchard Valley. The resulting number is the same as before, as are the final coordinates, so working with the older cache page or this changed one will give you the same results.

Do not use the coordinates above to calculate the actual cache coordinates. See the paragraph below the pictures for the correct coordinates to be used.

The dates on the map are NOT always the same as the dates on the exhibits/plaques. It may behoove (I like that word) you to physically verify each date. See below for a virtual cache bonus for your work.

You must find the exhibits based on the pictures below. They can be found in any order since you are looking for the date on the marker at each exhibit. The markers are normally 4" x 8" black plexiglas located at ground level. The camera angle in the pictures includes the marker needed for the number. It just can't be seen in the pictures because of it's size. You must insert the proper number from the sign in the fields below. Two of the exhibits do not have markers but the date can be easily found on the exhibit.

Exhibit Sign Information Missing No. (X)
Only For The Open Sky, 199X
Redwood #1, 199X
Ricardo Cat--
No Plaque 199X - (Date is on blue reflective glass)

Pool Complex: Orchard Valley, 19XX-XX
Subtract 3 from the 4th digit of the first date

Schooner Heritage--
No Plaque 199X - (Use the Sept. date engraved in base, not the ones on the brass plaque)

Once you have found the missing numbers they should be added together. The checksum of the five numbers is 10 (IE. 9+7+6+7+8 = 37; 3+7 = 10)

Now this two digit number (37 in the example) should be added to the Decimal minutes of the Latitude and Longitude of N38° 32.719; W090° 24.866. Using the example above, adding 37 to the coordinates would give you N38° 32.756; W090° 24.903 giving you the correct coordinates of the actual cache, which now consists of 35MM film container.

Bonus Virtual Cache
Aug. 7, 2003

Sorry, but the bonus cache is no longer available. The marker needed for verification has been removed because of earlier rains. The capsule is still buried but will be unlocatable once the grass has regrown.

See the Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor website for more information.
