This cache was inspired by jonboy’s Old Glory cache in the Hudson Highlands. This cache placement really does not do justice to his, but since I saw the US flag waving in the breeze, from Rt. 23, on a ridge off Echo Lake Rd., I really wanted to place a cache there.
Container is a 50mm ammo box hidden in an area with a nice view of Echo Lake, near the Passiac/Morris/Sussex county boarder. The initial contents include: The logbook, A TB, A broach (used for hip replacement surgery), A K-9 hip implant (made of titanium and used on dogs), WG$’s, park maps, pliers, screwdriver, Altoids container with shiny rocks (please take entire container), Altoids container with some first aid supplies (please take entire container), reconditioned railroad spike, 2 new sleeves of golf balls (please take whole sleeve), Yo-Yo, personal fan (with batteries), and a few other assorted things. The area is posted with “Permit required” signs. I have had a permit for the last three years and have never encountered a ranger, but I know they patrol the area. Go here for info on obtaining a permit. I knew where I wanted to place this cache but didn’t know the best way to get there. I parked as close as I could and took the .18 mile, and rather steep hike (300’ elevation gain) up the side of the mountain, only to find that there is an unmarked trail right by the flag pole. The terrain rating at the top of the page (and the information below) is based on my approach, but if you can find the trail the terrain will probably be 2-2.5 stars.
