Quick park and grab at a memorial on SH6
At this site in November 1917 two men were murdered and another was injured after Frederick William Eggers tried to rob a car carrying the mine payroll. He was captured 4months later and was the last person hanged in the South Island.
But by some queer quirk of fate, the memorial is now commonly known as the “Eggers monument” and has thus become probably the only memorial in the world dedicated to murder victims to be known by the name of the murderer.
