Geocache Description:

Stage one is a micro, giving coordinates to stage two, which is tradtional. This is pretty much a drive-up, accessible also in the wintertime.

This Multi-Cache is placed with the cooperation of "usyoopers" and "Comrades of Four", who have never met F2F... yet! This was a major intersection of some well traveled roads before the I-75 interstate was built. US-2 (now Mackinac Trail) was the Michigan version of Route 66. This 2 lane road linked Sault Ste. Marie (at the eastern terminus) with the western states. As you travel this section of road, you can still see flashbacks of a bygone era with the Motels, Stores, Restaurants, and Roadhouses, long closed up, and deteriorating, that once thrived on the business that the traffic of US-2 once brought them. Take a moment to review the monument and plaque here, dedicated to Frank F. Rogers, an administrater with the state Hiway Dept from 1905 to 1929. The long sweeping curves of the intersection give some clue to the speed and amount of traffic that used to go through here, but now is only designated as an MDOT carpool parking lot. The cache is very near I-75 exit 352, so it may well be used as a drop off point for TB's. usyoopers In 1941 the Writers' Program of the WPA in the state of Michigan published the book "Michigan a Guide to the Wolverine State" which, among other things, listed a number of auto tours through the state. The Comrades of Four would like to recognize the work of these researchers and writers by placing a series of geocaches along tour route 16A running from Sault Ste Marie to St. Ignace, (then known as a segment of US 2 but now known as the Mackinac Trail). Each geocache in this series marks a highlight of the 1941 tour. An often overlooked park along the Mackinac Trail, the Rogers Monument recognizes the contribution of Highway Commissioner Frank Rogers in the development of the road system of Upper Michigan From "Michigan a Guide to the Wolverine State" Rogers Monument was erected in honor of Frank Rogers, former highway commissioner; each county in the Upper Peninsula is represented by a stone in the monument.
