Geocache Description:

There is a whole pile of reasons to stop at the little park in Kearsarge Michigan which is home to the Ship of Stones.

Origin: During the Great Depression the copper mines closed and Keweenaw was among the most depressed areas in the US with as much as 75 % of its people receiving public assistance. President Roosevelt’s New Deal came to the rescue. WPA projects included beautiful stone work fences, bridges and monuments, which are still today, a signature feature of the Keweenaw. The stone ship resulted from a WPA road beautification project.

Reason for Ship of Stone in Kearsarge Michigan: One of the great battles of the Civil War was the sinking of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama in 1862 by the naval sloop USS Kearsarge (named for Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire). The town of Kearsarge was named for a local mining employee who had served on the USS Kearsarge and the Ship of Stone was built to honor the USS Kearsarge.

The Location: The park is a Veteran’s Memorial Park honoring all veterans from the area. Posters review three additional ships all named USS Kearsarge in honor of the first USS Kearsarge. There is a small parking area associated with the park.

The cache is in a small lock and lock box with new unregistered TB dog tags for the FTF. In addition it contains an activated TB and several small trade items.
