Der Grosse Sankt Bernhard (2469 müM) verbindet
Sembrancher im Wallis mit Aosta (Italien) im gleichnamigen Tal. Er
hat schon seit römischer Zeit eine wichtige Bedeutung als
europäische Nord-Süd Verbindung, aber auch Verbindung zwischen
Italien und Frankreich/England. Ein idyllischer See schmückt auf
der Passhöhe das Landschaftsbild. Die ganze Strecke von Sembrancher
nach Aosta beträgt 81 km.
Erst 1905 wurde eine Strasse über den Pass fertiggestellt. Seit
der Eröffnung eines beinahe 6 km langen Tunnels im Jahre 1964 ist
die Strecke ganzjährig befahrbar.
Seit hunderten von Jahren werden auf dem bekannten Hospiz die
Hunderasse "Bernhardiner" als Rettungs- und Lawinenhunde
gezüchtet.
Auch wenn du beinahe zum Cache fahren kannst, musst du dich die
letzten Meter doch selber hocharbeiten. Am besten nimmst du ein
Rucksack mit und tust so, als ob du am Picknicken wärst.
Grand Saint-Bernard (2469 m) connects Sembrancher (Kt. Wallis)
with Aosta (Italy). Its importance goes back to Roman times when it
already was one of the main routes from Italy to France/England.
There's a lovely lake at the top of the pass. The distance from
Sembrancher to Aosta is 81 km.
In 1905 the first road over the pass was opened. Since there's a
nearly 6km long tunnel which was opened in 1964, you can drive from
north to south (and back...) whole the year round.
The famous dogs called "Bernardiner" get breeded since centuries.
They are specialists in rescueing people out of avalanches.
Eventhough you may drive very close to the cache, you still have
to do some few steps up to the well hidden cache. Taking a backpack
with you and do as if you'd pick-nick is probably the most simple
way to distract potential muggels.
