Welcome to our fourth group of Geocaches in & around the Forest of Dean. Around English Bicknor is a circular route of about 5 miles, with English Bicknor as its centrepiece. The village is situated on a hill above the surrounding fields and woodland. It is a very old village with a Norman church & an ancient motte & bailey (the castle no longer exists). The village was first recorded as a hamlet as early as 1066. There are 9 caches in the series & some lovely views along the way.
The end of the Wysis Way for us is at Hillersland – it does continue downhill just below cache 8, but our route is on the track to the right (Forestry Commission track) just below the cache site.
Cache 8 is a small tube hidden in an obvious spot. Please take care putting it back as this is a busy Muggle area & we wouldn't want the cache to be too visible. The route to cache 9 is along the Forestry Commission track to the right (NW) which passes Mailscot Lodge and then descends steeply to become a flat curving track all the way back to Symond’s Yat.
