Lacului Rosu (Red lake) came into being owing to the natural closure of the valley, in the summer of 1837. It is one of largest lakes made by earthslide in Europe.
During a July night in 1837, at about 7 o´clock, some massive clouds gathered from the East, frighening thunders and a heavy rain that darkened the whole horizon. All this lasted until morning. It was then that two earthslides occured in the region of Bicaz. The Bicaz brook was dammed, and generated the Red Lake. With all probability the water reached its overflowing point only next year. It was difficult to percieve this information as a lake also due to the fact at that time, its water surface was pierced by the peaks of the many giant firtrees, that maimed trunks of which stay witness to the originality and specifity of the lake even today. The Red lake is situated in the central group of the Oriental Carpathians, in one of its most beautiful massifs Hasmasul Mare, crossed in the NE-SW dirrection by the upper course of the Bicaz brook. On this place you will see an area devastated by a great earthslide. This earthslide was caused by strong rain but similar earthslides could happen due to irresponsible human behavior towards nature. Furthermore you can see trunks of spruces which grew in the flooded valley. They are still on their places and they are more than 170 years old. They do not grow anymore because they are under the water surface, but they also don't rot because the chalybeate water turned their wood to stone. Here you will also find the beginnig of the Bicaz Pass - a mountain passage created by the river Bicaz in the Hasmas Mountains. This mountain range consists of sandstone and limestone, so it was easy for the wild river to force its way through. Since the times of the Roman Empire this mountain pass was used as a route across the mountains.

Thanks to Andrei - there is Romanian version Lacul Rosu - cel mai mare lac de baraj natural din Romania - face parte din masivul Hasmasul Mare si este cunoscut de localnici sub numele de "Taul Rosu". Lacul s-a format relativ recent, prin stavilirea apelor Bicazului, fenomen ce s-a produs în luna iulie a anului 1837. Ca urmare a precipitatiilor abundente marea cantitate de moloz stancos de pe versatul nord - vestic al Stancii Ucigasului a alunecat, blocand drumul Paraului Oii. Acest fenomen s-a produs în urma infiltrarii apelor unei puternice ploi, s-au cutremurului deosebit (produs în zona Vrancei în acea perioada) din 11 ianuarie 1838, dar esential este, ca s-a format prin deplasarea masei argiloase depuse cu ocazia ultimei ere glaciare pe versantul nord-vestica a muntelui Ghilcos (virful Ghilcos - 1.406 m) s-au prabusit, alunecind pe stratul de argila, inchizind valea in care piraiele Rosu, Licas, Oilor si Suhard, cu un mare debit de apa, s-au adunat formand lacul. Ca urmare a alunecarii de teren astfel produse, padurea de conifere care întovarasea cursul Bicazului a fost înecata, dar trunchiurile arborilor de atunci se vad si astazi, iesind ca niste cioturi de 1-2 m care se ivesc din apa strapungand imaginea Micului Suhard reflecatat in oglinda lacului. Piscurile muntilor ce coboara prapastiosi pina la malul lacului amplifica frumusetea si atractia acestei minuni a naturii. Chiar de langa oglinda apei, paduri falnice de molid sau de foioase urca pe versantii muntilor inconjuratori. In imprejurimi s-a dezvoltat o flora caracteristica zonelor subalpine, care, prin imbinarea cu padurile, formeaza un peisaj pitoresc si variat. Regiunea care inconjoara lacul a fost declarata rezervatie floristica si faunistica. Cel mai vestit reprezentant al faunei lacului este pastravul de munte care atinge marimi de-a dreptul impresionante (7-8 kg, 85 cm lungime). Lacul are si doua legende pe care va la lasam sa le descoperiti singuri :-)
