Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the South Downs Way, very close to the natural amphitheatre at Cheesefoot Hill, on the outskirts of Winchester.

In April 1944 six weeks before D-Day the US Army held a boxing tournament, thousands of British and American troops lined the steep ****s of the punch bowl to watch the top bill Joe Louis the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. It is also believed that Eisenhower briefed the US troops on the D-day landing in this stunning valley.

May now sees the annual music festival (Homelands) making use of the perfect natural bowl. This cache will be disabled around this event.

Suggested parking is at N51º 02.788 W001º14.755 There is an information board at this location giving a full history of the site. The walk to the cache can be muddy after rain so stout shoes or wellies would be advisable.
