Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
If you guessed that this cache has a theme, you’re correct...or you’re just a really good magician! The theme is MAGIC; “an illusory feat;
considered magical by naive observers” as defined by WordNet [definition].
Inspired by Sgt. Stitches’ "Mystery Exchange" cache we’ve decided to make this an exchange cache. Thus, this theme cache is for exchanging items related
to magic tricks/illusions (I’ll just refer to them as magic items from this point forward).
NOTE: As geocaching is a family-oriented sport, please do not leave any items that are inappropriate. Let’s make this a
fun and safe cache for those who might be the next David Copperfield or Harry Houdini! As well, please respect the "tennants" in this location.
IMPORTANT CACHE INFORMATION...
- Houdini was an expert escape artist. There wasn't a lock he couldn't open.
- As such, simply finding this cache won't do! You will also need to discover the combination of the lock that opens the cache.
- The answer to the combination lock lies within the area...look around!
- Question: What was TRICK's age (in years) multiplied by ten? You should end up with a 3 digit answer.
RULES OF HOUDINI’S HIDEAWAY MAGIC EXCHANGE...
- This theme cache is for exchanging items related to the art of magic.
- The exceptions are signature items, wheresgeorge dollars, travel bugs and the like.
- Please log your exchanges online so people know what magic items are in the cache.
- You may log this cache as a "find" only once, but you may visit and exchange as many times as you would like. After your first visit, just
post a "note" with your exchange information.
- You may log your find without exchanging a magic item. You are NOT required to make an exchange to log this one.
- Hopefully you’ll have success doing the following trick on your friends/family for an extra laugh.
FIRST, A LITTLE HISTORY...
Ehrich Weiss, better known as Harry Houdini, was born in Budapest, Hungary, on March 24, 1874. He began as a struggling young magician. He soon
discarded convention and began to concentrate on escapes. Houdini astonished worldwide audiences with illusions such as the "Upside-Down Water
Torture Cell" and “Metamorphosis”. He was also well known for his straitjacket escapes. Houdini died on October 31, 1926…which was Halloween.
You can learn more about Harry Houdini, who to this day remains the most famous escape artist of all time, [here].
AND NOW, THE MAGIC TRICK
Here’s a fun trick you can play on whomever you’re geocaching with (make sure they don’t read this trick first!).
PREPARATION
- You need a deck of cards, blank envelope and pen ;
- Secretly pull out the 7 of Hearts ;
- Place the 7 of Hearts facedown behind/underneath the envelope so it can’t be seen (i.e., don’t put it inside of the envelope yet) ;
INSTRUCTIONS
- Tell whomever it is that you’re going to do the trick to that you want to do a card trick. Have him/her shuffle the deck of cards (which
you know is now missing the 7 of Hearts) ;
- Tell him/her to start dealing cards from the deck facedown on the table ;
- Pull out the envelope with the 7 of Hearts hidden underneath it (also face down) ;
- Tell him/her to stop dealing the cards whenever they feel like it ;
- When they stop, place the envelope above the dealt face down cards on the table. When you do this, the 7 of Hearts that you also had face
down beneath the envelope will now be the top card on the deck ;
- Remind him/her that that he/she made the free choice to stop dealing cards when he/she wanted and that neither of you have any way of
knowing what cards are where within the shuffled deck ;
- Ask him/her to remove the envelope and pick up the top card from the face down deck on the table/ground ;
- Make a guess of what the card is. You’ll probably be wrong…just make sure you DON’T say the 7 of Hearts, otherwise, you’ll ruin the impact
of this trick ;
- Oh yeah…we already know the card is the 7 of Hearts…but don’t tell anyone ;
- After he/she has memorized the card, ask him/her to place the card in the envelope, seal it and write his/her name, date and time on the
envelope ;
- Tell him/her to keep the envelope on them at all times and to take it geocaching for the day…and make a silly comment about how the trick
is supposed to work but didn’t but you have a feeling that they should hold on to the envelope ;
- Now, go out geocaching. When you find Houdini’s Hideaway, let your friend open it ;
- stand back and enjoy the effect as your friend sees a message on the top inner cover of the cache that says, “This is your card – 7 of
Hearts”. If they don’t see it, stand back and make a comment as you gasp about the message ;
- Have fun!!
