Geocache Description:

Kentucky state legislators passed a law in 1893 requiring every 1st or 2nd class city to provide an armory with drill hall and ammunition repository for the local branch of the state militia. In 1904 the city of Louisville finally fulfilled that state requirement by purchasing land at the corner of Walnut Street and Sixth Street to beginning construction of a new armory.

Jefferson County Armory - 1906

The large, roughly city block long, 3 story brick and stone building was finished in December of 1905 at a cost of $440,000. It contained a swimming pool, and a rifle range in the basement, a large drill hall and offices on the main floor, a gym, bathrooms, and a band room on the second floor, and locker rooms on the third floor. The building was designed in the Beaux Arts style, and featured eagles perched atop the facade, cannons along the cornice line, and an arched entranceway.

Armory - circa 1925

The Jefferson County Armory became the new home of the famed Louisville Legion whose roots trace back to 1839. This infantry unit participated in the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American war, and WWI.  In 1922 the Louisville Legion became the 138th Field Artillery of the Kentucky National Guard.
This was the first National Guard unit in Kentucky.  The unit continued to use the building until 1946, when it moved into facilities closer to Standiford Field.

Although the Armory’s main function was that of a military installation and arsenal, the building was also intended as a community center for the City of Louisville, which at the time did not have a large meeting or recreational facility.

The facility became a popular recreational and community gathering place. It hosted sports activities such as basketball, tennis, roller skating, and ice hockey.

Auto Show circa 1930

Roller derbies, boxing, wrestling, rodeos, horse shows, conventions, and concerts were other popular events which occurred at the armory.

Elvis performed at the Armory for two nights in November of 1956.

The Southeast Conference basketball tournament was held here each year from 1941 to 1952.

The armory was also home to the University of Louisville basketball team from 1945 to 1955.

Basketball Game - 1950

In 1963 an almost 2 million dollar renovation took place to modernize the facility in order to attract more events.  The drill hall was converted to a 5000 seat arena, the 2nd floor gym was converted to a smaller arena, the exterior had a major facelift, and the facility was air-conditioned.  It was renamed Louisville Convention Center.  It served as a convention and concert venue until a larger convention center was built in 1975.  At that time it was renamed Louisville gardens.

Over time the old buildings importance to the city and its use has declined.  The last event held at the gardens was in 2006. It now just sits quietly unused.  There has been some talks about renovating The Gardens to be used for concerts in connection with 4th street live but to date nothing has been finalized. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

You are looking for a bison tube hidden next to the old Armory building.  Metered street parking is available near the cache. Remember to bring a writing instrument to sign the log and please replace cache as found hidden away from inquisitive eyes.
