Strengbergs tobaksfabrik grundades år 1762. Tobaken odlades i Jakobstad ända till slutet av 1860-talet. Elektriskt ljus fick fabriken år 1889 och var den första plats i Jakobstad som hade elektricitet. Under 1800-talet blev fabriken Jakobstads största arbetsgivare. Under 1920-talet var Strengbergs tobaksfabrik den största tobaksfabriken i Finland och hela Norden. Fabriken hade cirka 1300 arbetare anställda. På 1990-talet köptes fabriken av Swedish Match. Under året 1998 avvecklades tobaksfabriken Jakobstad, tillverkningen flyttade utomlands och en 236 årig tobakstillverkning i Jakobstad upphörde.
Nu är rödtegel delen stadshus och den andra, som är på sluttampen av en grundrenovering, inhyser flera olika företag. Strengbergs är också ”porten” till den gamla trästadsdelen i Jakobstad, Skata.
>Strengbergs tobacco factory was founded in 1762. The tobacco was locally grown in Pietarssari all the way into the late 1860’s. The factory was the first building in Pietarsaari to have electrical light in 1889. During the 1800’s the factory became the largest employer in Pietarsaari. During the 1920’s, Strengbergs tobacco factory was the largest tobacco factory in the Nordic Countries. At it’s peak the factory employed over 1300 persons. During the 1990’s it was acquisitioned by Swedish Match and was downsized and closed in 1998. Ending an 236 year tobacco making tradition in Pietarsaari.
The red brick part of Strengbergs is today housing the town administrative offices and all it’s functions, and the renovation of the other part is just finishing. Where several companies are now based. Strengbergs is also the ”gate” to the old wooden part of Pietarsaari. Skata.
