In 1875 works begun on the construction of the military defences along the North West Front, that would later be referred to as the Victoria Lines in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. Three major forts were built along the North West Front. The first fort to be built was that at Bingemma in 1875-1878 which was intended to defend the western extremity of the Front and which had a dual role to protect both coastal and inland zones.
Fort Bingemma's main function was to protect the West flank of the Victoria lines (along Malta's great fault) they could also be turned on the sea.
