Midsommarstången
I de nordiska länderna är midsommarfirandet gammalt, skapat ur både hedniska och kristna traditioner.
Benämningen midsommarstång används på hela Åland och i Åboland, medan man i stora delar av Sverige använder ordet majstång.
Medan man i Sverige klär sina stänger med nästan bara löv och blommor, dekoreras de Åländska stängerna med många detaljer utöver löven. På Åland får stången dessutom stå upp hela året om med undantag för veckorna före midsommar då den ska förberedas inför nästa resning.
På startkoordinaterna finns Storbys midsommarstång, en av de längsta på Åland och en av de få stångar som ännu tillverkas på gammal sätt. Beroende på i vilken by man befinner sig är alla stänger olika dekorerade.
Som grund finns den långa spiran som i Storby har rotknölen kvar. Den symboliserar förankringen i den fruktbara jorden.
På stången finns flertalet korsarmar. Dessa symboliserar fartygsriggen.
Mellan de olika armarna hänger lövade snören, ofta hängda så de bildar timglasformer. De symboliserar en god skörd.
De färgglada kronor binds under året och står för den sociala samhörigheten. Färgerna står för glädje och fest.
Segelbåtarna symboliserar den viktiga sjöfarten.
Spillkasen kommer troligen från ordet spirkase, eller vårdkase, elden som varnar sjöfarare för land.
Solhjulet, alltid vänt mot soluppgången. Den symboliserar Livskraft, fruktbarhet och värme.
Vimpeln var ofta försedd med ordet "Johannesfest" som är tiden för sommarsolståndet.
Fäktargubben i toppen är symbolen för flit och idoghet.

Midsummer pole
In the Nordic countries, celebration of the Midsummer is an old tradition, created from both pagan and Christian traditions.
The term "midsommarstång" (midsummer pole) is used on Åland and in Turku, while in most parts of Sweden, the word "majstång" is used.
In Sweden midsummer poles are decorated mainly with leaves and flowers. The midsummer poles of Åland are decorated with many details in addition to the leaves. On Åland, the pole is also standing all year round except for the weeks before midsummer when it will be prepared for the next raising.
At the starting coordinates, you'll find the midsommar pole of Storby wich is one of the tallest on the island. It is one ow few still made the old fashion way. Depending the location of the pole, you'll will find different dekorations and colors.
The midsommer pole consist of a long pole. In Storby the roots remains, symbolizing the anchoring to the fertile earth.
On the pole there are several crossarms. These symbolize the ship rig.
Between the crossarms are several laces, often in shapes of an hourglass symbolizing a good harvest.
The colorful "crowns" are made during the year and stand for social cohesion. The colors stands for joy and celebration.
The sailboats symbolize the important shipping industry.
The "spillkase" or "spilt beacon" (rainbow shaped object) probably comes from the word beacon, the fire that warns the seafarer for land.
The sun wheel, always facing the sunrise symbolizes viability, fertility and warmth.
The flag, often provided with the word "Johannesfest", symbolizes the time for summer solstice.
"The fencing fellow" in the top is the symbol of diligence and enthusiasm.
