Geocache Description:

short but steep hike to an old drain.

In former times rivers and brooks were used to float timber from the forests into the cities. Few brooks have enough water for this purpose, so dams (forming artificial reservoirs) had to be built. The timber was piled up in the river bed. When the waterstorages were drainded the timber was flushed downstream. The german word for such a dam-construction is „Klause“ (same origin as close).

In the area of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf remnants of a widespread system of these drains can be found. 13 minor and 1 major drain worked together, floating timber as far as Baden. The system was in use until 1939.

This cache is part of a series of caches, dealing with the subject (TAKL = TriftAnlageKlausenLeopoldsdorf). Don't forget to note down the information on the front page of the logbook, you will need it for the Bonus (which will be hidden later).

The Schöpfl-Drain was damaged, it has been repaired (as a part of the floodwater protection system). It was planned to reopen an old path to the Riesenbach-Drain, but as it seems this is only offered to school-classes on demand. As the dam is repaired now it is possible to use the path on the righthand side of the brook for the way back to the main road (not suitable for baby-carriages, there were a lot of fallen trees on the path). Due to the fact that there is an office at the place, the cachebox was placed in some distance.

At the headercoordinates you should be standing in front of the museum. The museum is opened every first and third Sunday (from April to October) from 14:00 to 16:00 (fee 3 Euro, kids are free). A sort of “bridge” is leading up to the door, count the number of planks that you have to walk over and take the number as P.
N1= 5.038, E1=56.701
N2= N1 –(4*P)/1000 and E2 = E1 + (3*P+11)/1000

Reception was not the best at the cache. The cache location can be reached on a path apart from the last 1 m, there is no need for bushwacking. The hideout again is “classic”. Depending on the path you choose it may be necessary to cross the water

The cache is a small lock-lock-box, containing log-sheets, pencil and a few small trading-items. Large enough for Geocoins and normal-sized Travelbugs.
Please hide it well again.
Have fun!
