Geocache Description:

Welcome to the world of Forensic Science. Today you will learn about fiber analysis and its place in crime scene investigation.

Although the majority of fibers are mass produced and have low evidentiary value, unique fibers may play crucial role in identification of the perpetrator. Fibers are primarily evaluated on their composition, color, and are typically placed into two general categories – natural and manufactured. The natural fibers are derived from animal and plant sources. This group includes wool, cotton, and silk. The manufactured fibers are man-made and include everything from regenerated fibers (rayon) to synthetic polymers (nylon).

The basic examination of fibers involves morphological evaluation under stereoscopic and polarized light microscopes. Additionally, chemical tests, determination of refractive index, and identification of fiber composition with infrared spectrophotometry may be performed. Oftentimes examination of dyes used in fiber coloring provides additional information and may be used for comparison between known and questioned samples.
