Arte
rupestre, pintura rupestre ou ainda gravura rupestre, é o
nome que se dá às mais antigas representações pictóricas
conhecidas, as mais antigas datam do período Paleolítico Superior
(40.000 a.C.). Gravadas em abrigos ou cavernas, nas suas
paredes e tectos rochosos, ou também em superfícies rochosas ao ar
livre, as figuras representadas são
diversas.
Estes vestígios são verdadeiros testemunhos
da história do homem nos tempos mais
remotos.
Normalmente os desenhos são formados por figuras de grandes animais
selvagens, como cavalos, cervos, auroques. A figura
humana surge raramente, sugerindo muitas vezes actividades como a
dança e, principalmente, a caça. Encontram-se também palmas de mãos
humanas e outros motivos abstratos, como por exemplo
espirais.
Técnicas
Na arte rupestre eram utilizadas diversas
téncicas para a gravação das rochas e sua coloração.
A gravação
era feita através da picotagem, abrasão ou
corte.
Já as tintas eram obtidas de diversas formas...
Nas
pinturas pré-históricas em cavernas é comum encontrar diversos
pigmentos, em alguns casos há evidências de que ocre foi
calcinado (aquecido) para obter outras cores

Gravuras de Montedor
No litoral Norte de Viana do Castelo, concentra-se um dos maiores
conjuntos de gravuras rupestres do Noroeste Peninsular.
A sua datação, não é segura, mas aponta para um período
compreendido entre o Calcolítico e a Idade do Ferro.
Baseando-se na comparação com outras gravuras encontradas
onde o mesmo método de marcação é utilizado.

Rock art,
rock painting or engraving rock is the name given to the earliest
known pictorial representations, the oldest dating from the Upper
Paleolithic period (40,000 BC). Recorded in shelters or caves, its
rocky walls and ceilings, also on rocky surfaces or outdoors, the
figures represented are diverse.
These remains are true testimony of human
history in ancient times.
Usually the paintings are formed by
major figures of wild animals such as horses, deer, aurochs. The
human figure appears rarely, often suggesting activities such as
dance, and especially hunting. There are also palms of human hands
and other abstract motifs such as
spirals.
The techniques
Three techniques were
used for the rock
engraving,
fine line incision, pecking and abrasion.
But for the paintings the
materials were obtained
from different sources...

On the north coast
line of Viana do Castelo, we can see one of
the most important groups of rock art from the
Norwest of the Iberian
Peninsula. Dating of the carvings has been
difficult although a comparison with styles seen in datable
portable and parietal art in Iberia was the method used. Based
on some evidences we can place then between the Chalcolithic and
Iron Age.
