Let your thoughts be known.
The following is a copy of a flyer from REI. From the wording of it I would assume that the forest service does not understand what geo-caching is all about. Give your thoughts to the Forest Service and log this one!
1) If geocaching is of a commercial nature (people are paying a fee to a commercial enterprise), it requires a special use permit, which first requires an application and a fee. Permits can also be required for things like continued ground disturbance (digging/re-digging), groups of more than 75 people at one time.
2) Geocaching is an inappropriate activity for designated areas like wilderness, research natural areas etc. The leaving of a cache of any kind in most wilderness is illegal.
3) Geocaching on Forest Service public lands need to be sensitive to issues- some other public members consider it the same as leaving litter, is it causing unnecessary trampling to vegetation or disturbing of wildlife habitat. Because of the high use that many of our areas receive especilly the tri-canyon area; we recommend that geocaching be done as much as possible on land such as private ownership.
Geocaching is a new issue on the Forests, its something that is being discussed and looked at. Public can call me on questions
