Geocache Description:

This series of caches memorialize those unfortunate individuals that were murdered on the slopes of beautiful Mt. Tamalpais. May this type of desecration never happen again.

Between August 19, 1979 and May 2, 1981, nine people were murdered and one wounded on Bay Area trails. Three murders were committed on the trails of Mt. Tamalpais, two on Rock Spring Trail, and one on Matt Davis Trail.

On October 13, 1980, Anne Alderson, twenty-six, was seen by several eye witnesses at Mountain Theatre. It had been a rainy day and business was slow at West Point Inn. At 5:00 PM, John Henry, the live-in manager of the Inn, closed up and went trail running. Arriving at Mountain Theatre, he spotted Anne sitting on one of the stone seats. He thought of warning her of the two previous murders on the mountain, but she was so deep in thought, he chose not to interrupt her. Anne's car was ticketed at 8:00 PM, when the park closed. When Ranger Michael Fitzsimmons noticed the car still there the next morning, he reported the incident. Calling in the plate numbers, he found out that the car was registered to Dr. Robert Alderson, whose daughter, Anne, had been reported missing the previous evening. Anne's body was found mid-afternoon on Telephone Line Trail; a little used trail that goes from the Mountain Theatre parking lot to Rock Spring Trail, bypassing the theatre.

David Carpenter, the person responsible for these murders, is in prison at San Quentin and will never see the outside world again. May a tragedy such as this never again occur on the sacred slopes of Mt. Tamalpais.

The cache is a small, camouflaged container. There's plenty of room for travel bugs, geocoins, and small trade items. Bring Your own pen to sign the log.
