Geocache Description:

VIVA LA VIDA (ST PETER WILL KNOW MY NAME) COLDPLAY

This cache is part of a series . The caches are named after songs and artists that have something (loosely) to do with the cache placement or the surrounding area. This cache can be found in the Aston Flamville area.

Admire the church! St Peters Church has been here a long while. Is that really a giant redwood (in the Church grounds. Wellingtonia or  Giant Sequoia) ?

The first church here was believed to have been founded in the tenth century according to records held by John Nichols in 1784. This was based on the plain architecture and a typically Saxon style window in the north wall.

In the wall behind the organ is cable patterned stonework found in Norman churches.

The main family at this time were the de Flamenvilles  and they remained at Aston Flamville until the daughter of Sir William Flamville married into the Turville family in the early 1500's . The Turvilles remained in Aston Flamville for the next 350 years.

"William Turville Knight, Lord of this towne", lies in the tomb chest next to the altar.

The Cradock family bought the estate in 1764. Joseph Cradock was a wealthy hosier from Leicester. There are many marble monuments to the Cradock Hartopp family in the church. They were responsible for adding the marble font and the silver plate, and also for many renovations in the church. Unfortunately some of the alabaster slabs from the Turville tombs were lost at this time.

The above information has been taken from the booklet  "Aston Flamville through the ages", which can be found in the Church itself. The Church Wardens are very friendly and helpful! A visit can be arranged by church Wardens
