Geocache Description:

A cache in memory of a great Australian!

The cache is located  near Holy Spirit College, Bellambi

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. When she was in Penola she met Julian Tenison Woods and together they opened the first St Joseph's School in 1866.

Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph to continue this work. Over the many following years, the number of Sisters grew as did their schools. Schools were opened as the needs arose: in country towns, mining towns, cities. The Sisters also became involved in other areas of need including setting up a refuge for women in need and orphanages for children, visiting prisons and working with the sick.

Bellambi

In 1983 Holy Spirit College opened as a result of the amalgamation of St Paul's College and Holy Cross College. Although standing side by side on land bordered by Cawley and Gladstone Streets, the two schools had previously existed separately - St Paul's as a 7-12 boys' school in the care of the Marist Fathers, and Holy Cross as a 7-10 girls' school run by the Sisters of St Joseph.

In 1983, with Fr William Ryder as Principal and Sister Maria Casey as Assistant Principal, Holy Spirit College began the task of building a new and proud identity, enhancing the traditions of St Paul's and Holy Cross Colleges.

Rather than dismissing the past, Holy Spirit holds in high esteem and gratitude the founders of its college – naming teams after them.

MacKillop House honours Mary MacKillop, the founder of the Sisters of St Joseph. This order opened a College for girls in 1966 on land west of St Paul's that was granted to them by the Marist Fathers. The first Principal of Holy Cross was Sr Angela Grant, after whom the remaining House at Holy Spirit is named. Along with four other sisters, Sister Angela taught, literally, amidst construction and marched the students around the streets of Bellambi as there were no adequate areas for the girls to have lunch.

Mary MacKillop ….

Mary MacKilop's famous saying was "Never see a need without doing something about it"

Well..... there was a need, a geochache in her honour, and something has been done about it!

This is one of many caches placed in significant locations of her story.

Mary died on August 8th, 1909.

She was declared Australia’s first Saint in 2010.

THANK YOU to Hoojar for the hide.
