My loathing of all things football, and especially the StoopidBowl, is no secret. Rather than listen to folks babble about some silly game, I tend to find somewhere well away from rednecks and televisions, until the madness is over. I'm thinking, a nice kayak trip is in order.
Let's meet at the Blue Springs boat ramp, at the west end of W French Ave, Debary, around 5:00ish.
We'll be launching and returning here, so, no need for shuttling vehicles.
My plan is to go south (against the current) down the St. Johns about half a mile, then turn right, following Snake Creek northward to Hontoon Dead River. We'll follow Hontoon Dead River to Birdhouse Canal, then turn left, going back to the St. Johns, which we'll follow back to the ramp. The total paddle is about 9.5 miles, and takes about 5 or 6 hours, depending on how many caches you stop for.
If you don't have a kayak, let me know. I have several spares.
If you can't paddle, just come to the ramp and schmooze during the launch or landing.
There are roughly 80 bazillion alligators who call this stretch home, so, swimming is discouraged.
Other critters often encountered include venomous snakes, ticks, chiggers, manatee and mosquitoes.
Please come prepared!
It's gonna be rather chilly, so dress accordingly. At a minimum, you'll need a whistle, a PFD and a white light, capable of illuminating in 360 degrees. For you Gators fans, that means bring a flashlight. Fleece or wool is the preferred material for cold water paddles, as it retains its thermal properties, even when wet.
Hope to see you there!
