In 1834 a mail system was established in Turkey, followed soon after by the Ottoman post that operated between Beirut and Jerusalem., along with the private courier service of the Anglican mission.
In the far-off days of the early nineteenth century, when brigands abounded on the route to Jerusalem and donkeys and camels plodded along the dusty roads, an organized postal service was no more than a dream.
The building of the Austrian Imperial Post Office marked the beginning of the public, international postal service that developed in Israel as part of the activity of the European powers (following the Austrians' lead, similar postal services were then established by France, Russia, Germany, and Italy). Austria, which was one of the powers active in Israel, maintained a steamship line between Trieste and Israel. This line, known as the Austrian Lloyd's Agency, was founded in 1836. At first, mail would come once a fortnight, upon the arrival of a steamship from Europe. The intervals were later decreased to weekly periods, and towards the end of the nineteenth century the mail arrived even more frequently.
The Austrian postal service in Jerusalem apparently had its beginnings in 1853 on a narrow street in the Armenian Quarter, not far from here. The post office operated from that address until it moved to its new building opposite the Citadel.
When and by whom was the new post office building constructed? According to the historical sources, the post office began to operate from the location in 1859 and the building was most probably erected shortly before. The elders of the Armenian community relate that the structure was built by one of their members, Hagop Moredian. He and his family were colorful Jerusalem figures in the second half of the nineteenth century. Moredian was appointed as Austrian honorary consul in Jerusalem, and he changed his name to one with a more Western ring - Pascal. His eldest son greatly disappointed him when he married a cabaret girl from Europe, and the incensed father declared that he was disinheriting his son. Moredian's daughter Mariana was also drawn to Europe and married an Italian officer. Various members of the Moredian family lived in the building from the time of its construction until 1964. During the period when the Austrian post office operated, they resided in the upper story.

The next building number (IJ) (to right only few meters from the sign!). This building was a watch shop, you can see in the old picture. Was there money changing also? Maybe was the first money changing watch shop in Jerusalem?
