Das Schloss ist an der Stelle des früheren römischen Kastells Lentia entstanden. Die erste bekannte Erwähnung stammt von 799. Das Schloss diente Kaiser Friedrich III. von 1489 bis 1493 als Residenz. Aus dieser Zeit stammt das heute noch erhaltene Friedrichstor, das auf einem Wappenstein die bekannte Inschrift A.E.I.O.U. trägt.
Während der Franzosenkriege diente das Schloss als Lazarett. Der Stadtbrand im Jahr 1800 ging von hier aus. Bei diesem Brand wurden der Südflügel und ein Teil des Quertraktes zerstört.
Im Jahr 1811 diente das Gebäude als Provinzialstrafhaus, in den Jahren 1851 bis 1945 als Kaserne für Soldaten. Zwischen 1953 und 1963 erfolgte der Ausbau und die Restauration des Gebäudes zum Schlossmuseum der oberösterreichischen Landesmuseen.
Das Schlossmuseum wurde 1963 teileröffnet, die Gesamteröffnung erfolgte 1966. Es sind historische und volkskundliche Sammlungen untergebracht. Dauerausstellungen sind auch historische Waffen und historische Musikinstrumente und alte Münzen. Zusätzlich finden auch immer wieder Sonderausstellungen statt. Im Schlosshof werden gelegentlich Open-Air-Veranstaltungen durchgeführt.
Der als Stahl-Glas-Konstrukt realisierte neue Südflügel, dessen Errichtung 24 Millionen Euro kostete, beherbergt seit Juli 2009 die technikgeschichtlichen und naturwissenschaftlichen Sammlungen des Schlosses.

The castle was built on the site of the former Roman fort Lentia. The first known reference dates back to the year 799. The castle was used as a residence by the emperor Friedrich III. from 1489 to 1493. The still existing Friedrichstor dates back to this period and bears the well-known inscription A.E.I.O.U.
During the French wars, the castle was used as a military hospital. The city fire in 1800 had its starting point from here. In this fire, the south wing of the castle and parts of the transversal wing were destroyed.
In 1811, the building was used as a provincial prison and from 1851 to 1945 as a barrack for soldiers. Between 1953 and 1963 the building was reconstructed and restored to the so called Schlossmuseum of the Upper Austrian State Museum.
The Schlossmuseum was partly opened in 1963, the total opening was in 1966. There can be seen historical and folkloristic collections. At permanent exhibitions there are also historical weapons, historical musical instruments and old coins shown. In addition, there are special exhibitions too. Occasionally open-air events are held in the castle courtyard.
The new south wing, which was built as a steel-and-glass construction, cost about 24 million euro. Since July 2009 this new building shows engineering and natural history collections.
