Majuri Yrjänä Svinhufvud sai 1630-luvulla hallitukselta käskyn rakentaa Kyrön laajaan Hämeenmetsään vanhan Kyrönkankaantien varteen linnoituksen eli skanssin, jonka tehtävänä oli valvoa liikennettä tiellä ja ottaa kiinni sotapalvelusta pakoilevia. Kyrön-Skanssin linnoitus toimi Karviassa Kyrönkankaantien ja Karvianjoen yhtymäkohdassa yli 30 vuotta, varusmiehiä siinä palveli noin sata. Linnakkeen komentajana toimi majuri Svinhufvud ja hänen jälkeensä kapteeni Arvi Timi. Ajoittain linnakkeessa työskenteli myös oma saarnaaja. Alueen rakennukset ovat tuhoutuneet tulipalossa. Menneisyydestä muistuttaa luodinjälkineen Mäki-Kantin aitta vuodelta 1769 (N 62 04.409 E 022 30.131 Kyrönkankaantie).
Tykkiasemia samaan paikkaan Karvianjoen rantaan oli marski Klaus Flemingin käskystä kaivettu jo nuijasodassa 1597. Tuolloin ne oli tarkoitettu pohjalaisia nuijamiehiä vastaan. Tien sotilasperinteitä ovat jatkaneet Vatulanharjun kasarmi Venäjän vallan aikana sekä Niinisalon varuskunta 1930-luvulta.

The Government of Swedish Empire gave in the 1630's to the noble major Georg Svinhufvud order to built a fortress in the large boreal forest of Hame by the old Kyronkankaantie road in Finland in the place where the road crossed the river Karvianjoki. The mission of the fortress was to see after traffic on the road and catch runaways who kept in hiding from their military service of the Crown. In the Kyronskanssi fortress worked over hundred soldiers and it was operative over 30 years. The commander was major Georg Svindhufvud and after him captain Arvid Timi. At times in the fortress worked a preacher of its own. The buildings in the area have been distroyed in the fire. About the history tells us the granary of Maki-Kantti with its bullet holes. The granary was built in 1769 (N 62 04.409 E 022 30.131 Kyronkankaantie).
After the order of Lord High Constable Klaus Fleming some artillery bulwarks had been dug in the same place as early as in 1597 in the Cudgel War against rebel farmers from Ostrobothnia. Later the military traditions have been continued by the Vatulanharju barracks in the 19th century and the garrison Niinisalo since 1930's.
