Surrounded by cotton-producing plantations, Independence became the wealthiest community in Texas and a Baptist stronghold when selected to be the site of Baylor University in 1845. Reaching its peak during the 1850s, the town was recognized as an educational, economic, and religious center. Here in Independence you will learn a lot about former resident Sam Houston, the old 300, Baylor University and the oldest Baptist Church in Texas. We encourage you to take your time and enjoy exploring!
