Geocache Description:

NOT A CACHE AND DASH - SINGLE TRACK NO THROUGH ROAD WITH LITTLE TURNING SPACE

We enjoy this walk as it leads onto various others.  My Dad's Aunty was the housekeeper of Greatwood House in the 40's.  It has a coloured history, however I could find very little about Greatwood House itself other than it was built in 1840 by the Daniel family of Trelissick.  It has had a coloured history having been a private home, then a hotel and then converted to flats (or apartments much posher) as it is today.

However, what I did discover is that in 1966, the day after England won the world cup, a party of 31 residents set off from the Greatwood Hotel on a boat trip along the Cornish coast.  The boat, the Darlwyne, a 45’ long pleasure cruiser was, however, unlicensed and overloaded – it should have carried no more than 12 passengers.  It was not sea worthy , with no radio and only two lifebelts on board.

The party cruised to Fowey.  Bad weather began to set in and the Captain, Brian Bown, was warned not to leave the safety of Fowey harbour.  He did not heed this advice and took the Darlwyne back out to see – no trace of her was ever found again.

Despite a massive air-sea search, lasting a week and using both RAF and private aircraft alongside the RNLI and coastguard boats, only 12 bodies were recovered – along with the Darlwyne’s dingy and a child’s beachball.
