Geocache Description:

The Flaming Cliff site, really Bayanzag is a region of the Gobi Desert in the Ömnögovi Province of Mongolia, in which important fossil finds have been made. It was given this name by American paleolontologist Roy Chapman Andrews. The area is most famous for yielding the first discovery of dinosaur eggs.

The rock gives off a glowing orange colour, hence the nickname. Geologists call this formation the Djadochta Formation, which is mostly situated in central Asia and dates from the Late Cretaceous Period.

The area preserves an arid habitat of sand dunes with little freshwater apart froma oases and arroyos. In fact, the present-day climate at most Djadochta Formation sites differs little from what it was some 80 mya.

The Saxaul Plant in the Gobi desert is often the only kind of tree found. The thick bark stores humidity and pay be pressed for drinking water, making Saxaul an important sauce of water in dry regions. It used to be, and in some places still is, the only wood that nomads can use for heating and cooking.
A parasit plant that grows on the roots is prized in Chinese medicine as the"desert ginseng".
