The Cache Across America Series: This is a series of caches that will take you on a caching tour of the entire United States. One cache is hidden in each of the 50 states. These caches each contain a numeric clue that will lead you to one final cache located in our nation's capitol upon completion of the series.

About this cache: For 120 years, a railroad had operated through Vernon. Once a bustling railroad corridor, the railroad has long since left Vernon. The last freight train passed through town in 1970. The rails were removed in the mid 1970's, but the roadbed remains. Today, the old railroad route is part of Vernon's Rails to Trails linear park.

The Vernon Depot passenger station was located on the narrow strip of land that is bordered by Church Street, Phoenix Street, Birch Road and Washington Street. Today, nature has reclaimed the area, but there are still reminders of the past. Near the recently cleared picnic area across from the Church Street parking area, the turntable pit that once turned around the locomotives making the trip to Rockville and back remains. A short distance from there, the footings for the water tank poke out of the ground. There is a visitors shelter, built as a Boy Scouting project, on the footprint of the old passenger station. Its unique roof built to resemble that of the original building. Near there, a short telegraph pole sticks out of the ground about 7 feet. It had at one time supported two wood boxes that I'm told were for communication devices. The holes for the fasteners are still there.

There are some interesting spots here. You can still see the foundation of where the water tower must have been at. With the circular area ringed with stones. It is used alot so the muggle factor may be high so stealth may be needed although the cache final is hidden out of sight. Please do not bushwack to or away from the final as we don't want to create a giveaway path for the muggles to follow.

Cache Details: This was originally a short multi but, due to problems with the first part not being put back correctly (causing it to be muggled), if is no longer a multi.

Logging Requirements: Enjoy this cache as you would any other. If you are searching this cache as a participant in the Cache Across America series, please post a photo of yourself or a member of your group with the cache in your online log. If you for some reason are unable to meet the photo requirement, please make alternate arrangements to verify your find with the individual cache owner. There is no photo requirement for non-challenge participants.

Individual verification of all 50 state finds will be required before logging the series final.

If participating in the series, please take note of the three digit code located inside this cache. Save this code in a secure place. When you have visited all 50 caches, and have collected all 50 codes, you are welcome to seek and find the final cache! Good luck!
