This is a Night Cache - Spooky! During the winter, time for
geocaching is limited, but you can now extend your activities into
the early evening!
This cache can only be done in the dark (or at dusk as long as you
have a good torch and keen eyesite), as it relies upon a trail of
drawing pin size reflectors that are impossible to follow during
daylight.
NOTE: TO SEE A REFLECTOR YOU MUST HOLD YOUR TORCH CLOSE TO THE SIDE
OF YOUR HEAD AT EYE-LEVEL WHILST SEARCHING.
To find the start of the reflector trail, go to a tree on the
common at N51 10.728 E00 48.872. The correct tree will bear TWO
small triangular orange coloured reflectors arranged one above the
other just above head height. Once you have found the start point
search all around using your torch (HELD AT EYE LEVEL) to locate
the first reflector in the trail.
The trail is marked by single reflectors placed between 5 to 8 feet
high on trees. In many places the next reflector is over 100 yds
away, so you have to search carefully at each stage, and in all
directions at track junctions, to find the next reflector.
The cache site is marked by a set of THREE reflectors at about head
height. The theme of the cache is 'glow-in-the-dark' and it is well
stocked with a number of such items.
Please take care to conceal the cache well, as what looks good at
night may not look as effective in daylight!
The recommended car park (illuminated by street lights) is the
lay-by on the A20 at: N51 10.745 E00 49.189
From the lay-by go along a vehicle track into some trees near the
road junction with the A20. It leads into an open area where there
are a couple of houses and another parking area. At the far end of
the track is the entrance to the common.
The terrain is largely firm and dry but after wet spells it will be
waterlogged/muddy in places, and appropriate footware is essential.
There is a large herd of long-horn cattle on the Common but they
are docile. However that does not stop them being quite spooky at
night!
The following is good advice regarding night geocaching, and should
be observed:
1. DO NOT go alone.
2. Each person should carry a good torch and spare batteries.
3. Night Geocaching is not suitable for very young children, or
adults of a nervous disposition.
4. Do mark the location of your car, as you will have to find your
own way back!
My thanks go to Neil MORRIS, the land manager of Hothfield Common,
for his kind consent to this night cache.
