Hidden to commemorate my 'Britain's Third Most Remote Event Cache (Unst)' (GC19G7E) event on the 25th of June 2009, this cache requires a walk of approx 2Km/1.3miles each way from car parking by a gate beside the old Saxa Vord military site.
On a good day the walk to this cache will reward you with great views of the UK's last spluters; Muckle Flugga with its lighthouse, and the flat dome of rock that is Out Stack. On a bad day, you'll be able to see your hand in front of your face... hopefully! In case there are no views, this cache has been re-set at a point you can't easily miss - the end of the military compound fence. It used to be at the remains of the old signal hut where messages to and from the lighthouse were sent and received, which is on the headland opposite. The cache is not within the compound, so please don't attempt to enter it!
(Re)Hidden with the help and support of Jonathan Swale of Scottish Natural Heritage and Captain David Edmondston, who owns the opposite headland. Sincere thanks to them for their assistance and permission for the placement of this cache originally, and its repositioning in June/July 2016.
After finding the cache, I can recommend a visit to the Hermaness Nature Reserve on the opposite headland where you can follow the path/board-walk down to the cliff-top walk (if the weather allows) for great views of the rocks and wildlife. Puffins seem to love the camera along here! Passing 'the Setter House' sheep pens and then retracing your route on the raised pathway across the top of the hill, back to the car park near the visitors centre. A cracking walk. Sadly this cache had to be moved due to cachers not following notices, crossing barriers and taking the direct route to the cache. As they say, 'this is why you can't have nice things' - The new site offers less wildlife, but that also means less wildlife to disturb!
