Als in der Tertiärzeit die Alpen aufstiegen, lagerten Flüsse im Allgäu sog. Molasse-
schichten aus Kies, Sand und Ton ab, die später oft zu „Nagelfluh“ verfestigt und
in Alpennähe gefaltet wurden.
Dem warmen Tertiär folgten die 4 Eiszeiten, in denen der Rheingletscher nach
Oberschwaben vorstieß und Gesteine der Alpen hierher verfrachtete. Die
Ablagerungen der Mindel- und Risseiszeit bauen die Rücken und Platten um
Leutkirch und Bad Wurzach auf.
In der jüngsten Eiszeit (Würmeiszeit) drang der Gletscher vor etwas 20.000 Jahren
nur noch bis Isny vor. Durch den Zusammenschub und das Ausschmelzen der
Gesteinstrümmer entstanden am Eisrand die Endmoränen. Die würmeiszeitliche
Landschaft zeigt mit ihren Kuppen, Senken, Seen und Mooren frische, abwechs-
lungsreiche Formen. An ihrem Aussenrand haben Schmelzwässer breite Schotter-
verebungen aufgeschüttet.
Die Wilhelmshöhe besteht im Kern aus oberer Süßwassermolasse, die an den
Rändern zutage tritt.
Darüber liegen Riß- und Mindelschmelzwasserablagerungen.Einzelne Schotterbänke
sind durch nachträgliche Kalkeinlagerungen zu „Nagelfluh“ verkittet.

When in the Tertiärtime the Alps climbed up, rivers camped down in the Allgäu
sucked. Molasse-pile up from gravel, sand and tone from which hardens later
