LA TORRE DEL GERRO
Esta torre, de 13.5 m de altura forma parte de la red de fortificaciones alzadas a lo largo de la costa, en el S. XVI para prevenir las constantes incursiones de los piratas berberiscos.
La torre circular de forma troncocónica presenta dos cuerpos superpuestos, actuando el inferior como contrafuerte de la estructura. La puerta de acceso a su interior está elevada de la base. Dos matacanes defienden las dos puertas de acceso. Destaca el escudo de armas de Carlos V, con 4 barras, corona del antiguo Reino de Valencia y el águila bicéfala de los Austria. En el interior los diferentes niveles se comunican por una obertura, a la que se accede por medio de una escalera móvil o simple cuerda.
Se tiene constancia de otro torreón ubicado en el actual faro de Sant Antoni, además de la citada torre de l’Almadrava (Ruta2). Las torres tenían comunicación visual, aunque también utilizaban otros medios, como señales con espejos, fuego, etc. Disponían de guardias que se encargaban tanto de la custodia de las mismas, como de eventuales traslados a otras torres o ciudadelas para avistar cualquier peligro.

Due to the frequent attacks From corsairs and Berber pirates, the valencian coasts was the most dangerous border of the kingdom during the 16ch century. Philip II promoted a centralised defense system of the Mediterranean coast based on watchtowers, wich were built in strategic locations. The Gerro Tower is located 130 meters above sea level. It was built in local irregular masonry and is trunkconic-shaped . The inferior part diameter measures 6.5 meters and the tower is 14.5 meters high. It presents two small-sized holes protected by machicolations . The first one is the access, placed on the opposing side to the sea, quite high from the ground. The second one is a window with an extensive view of the sea. Under the machicolation over the sea, we can find a small window and between this window and the interior one, there is a shield with the double-headed eagle and the Valencian Kingdom arms. The inside is divided into two floors over a solid inferior body. The communication among floors consisted of a narrow hole with a ladder. Because of structural problems, the base was reinforced with a a wall in its inferior half. This addition made the tower the appearance of a vase (GERRO), which is the current name of the monument.
From Torre del Gerro you can propose several routes: the visit to the Cova Tallada, the mills of Javea, the cape of San Antonio, the port of Javea, ...
