ENGLISH
The town was built in Prussia around the fortress Ordensburg Marienburg which was founded in 1274 on the east bank of the river Nogat by the Teutonic Knights. Both the castle and the town of Marienburg (rendered in Polish as Malborg or Malbork) were named for their patron saint, the Virgin Mary. This fortified castle became the seat of the Teutonic Order and Europe's largest Gothic fortress. During the Thirteen Years War, the castle of Marienburg was pawned by the Teutonic Order to their imperial soldiers from Bohemia. They sold the castle in 1457 to King Casimir IV of Poland in lieu of their pay. This separated the castle from the city in political terms, as the citizens resisted take-over by Poland.
Under continuous construction for nearly 230 years, the castle complex is actually three castles nested in one another. A classic example of a medieval fortress, it is the world’s largest brick castle and one of the most impressive of its kind in Europe. The castle was in the process of being restored when World War II broke out. During the war, the castle was over 50% destroyed. Restoration has been ongoing since the war. However, the main cathedral in the castle, fully restored just prior to the war and destroyed during the war, remains in its ruined state. The castle and its museum are listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.

Die Marienburg ist eine deutsche Ordensburg und liegt etwa 60 km südöstlich von Danzig an der Nogat, einem Mündungsarm der Weichsel, in der polnischen Stadt Malbork. Von 1309 bis 1454 war die Burg Sitz der Hochmeister und somit Herrschaftszentrum des Deutschen Ordens im ostpreußischen Ordensstaat. Es handelt sich um den größten Backsteinbau Europas und eine weiträumige Burganlage, die größtenteils aus roten Ziegeln an der Stelle der alten Burg Trappeinen erbaut wurde.Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Burg zu 60 Prozent zerstört. Danach fiel sie an Polen und wurde vom polnischen Staat wiederaufgebaut.
Seit einigen Jahren ist auch die Marienkirche wieder für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Diese wurde nicht renoviert, sondern bisher nur gegen Einsturz gesichert; das Ausmaß der Zerstörung wird so auf eindringliche Weise dokumentiert.
Die Marienburg ist heute einer der wichtigsten Anziehungspunkte für Touristen in Polen; sie wird überwiegend als Museum genutzt. Seit dem 7. Dezember 1997 zählt die Marienburg zum Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO.

Zamek krzyzacki w Malborku (niem. Ordensburg Marienburg) – trzyczesciowa twierdza obronna w stylu gotyckim o kubaturze ponad 250 000 m³. Sklada sie z zamku niskiego, zamku sredniego i zamku wysokiego. Jest to jeden z najwiekszych zachowanych zespolów gotyckiej architektury na swiecie. Pierwotna nazwa zamku uzywana przez zakon krzyzacki brzmiala Marienburg, czyli Gród Marii. Od 14 wrzesnia 1309 do 1457 zamek w Malborku byl siedziba wielkiego mistrza krzyzackiego, a miasto stolica panstwa zakonnego.Pod koniec lat 50. XX wieku powolano Spoleczny Komitet Odbudowy Zamku. Od 1961 roku jest siedziba Muzeum Zamkowego. W 1997 roku zamek krzyzacki w Malborku zostal zapisany na liscie swiatowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. Od kilku lat, organizowane sa inscenizacje zdobywania zamku malborskiego przez wojska polsko-litewskie po bitwie pod Grunwaldem. W okresie od maja do wrzesnia odbywaja sie tu tez od wielu lat spektakle typu Swiatlo i dzwiek. Na zamku nadal prowadzone sa skomplikowane prace remontowe.
