Čo je to geoglyf? Je to umelecké dielo, obrazec. Býva veľkých rozmerov a je viditeľný najmä z výšky, respektíve z diaľky. Najznámejšie sa nachádzajú v Peru (Nazca), sú staré niekoľko tisíc rokov a sú súčasťou zoznamu UNESCO.
What is a geoglyph? It is a piece of art of an enormous size. Usually can be recognised only from above or from a distance. The most famous geoglyphs are located in Peru - called Nazca, which are also included in the World Heritage List.
Geoglyf pod Spišským hradom sa určite radí medzi atrakcie tohto regiónu. Je dobre viditeľný z cesty medzi Levočou a Braniskom.
A Geoglyph under the Spiš Castle is definitely one of the attractions of the Spiš Region. It is well visible from the road between Levoča and Branisko.
Predlohou pre obrazec boli kone vyobrazené na minciach, ktoré sa našli priamo na Spišskom hrade počas archeologických vykopávok v 60.-tych rokoch 20. storočia. Predpokladá sa, že tieto mince tu razil keltský kmeň Kotíni, približne v 1. storočí pred Kristom. Rovnaký obrazec koňa sa nenašiel nikde inde na Slovensku. Tri mince sú súčasťou hradnej expozície (a sú ľahko prehliadnuteľné 
).
The geoglyph was created on the base of a Celtic coin found in Spiš Castle during archaeological excavations in the 1960s. It is assumed that these coins were minted in Spiš Castle by Celtic tribe Kotini, approximately in the 1st century BC. The same pattern with a horse was not found in any other place in Slovakia. The three coins are currently part of the castle exposition (and they are easy to be overlooked ).
Autorom diela je Austrálčan Andrew Roberts, ktorý stavia geoglyfy po celom svete vrámci série Rytmus života. Námet na ne vždy súvisí s lokalitou. Ten pod Spišským hradom bol postavený za dva týždne v roku 2008. Na jeho stavbe sa podieľalo okolo 140 ludí, prevažne nezamestnaných obyvateľov obce.
Obrazec má naozaj úctyhodné rozmery - približne 100x80 metrov. Je postavený z travertínových kameňov pochadzajúcich z neďalekého lomu Dreveník. Kamene sú na sebe uložené bez akéhokoľvek spojovacieho materiálu a tvoria múr vysoký a široký približne 1m a dlhý asi 800m. Hodnota kameňa použitého na stavbu bola v tom čase 330 000 €.
The author of the geoglyph is an Australian sculptor Andrew Roberts, who constructs geoglyphs around the world within the project called "Rhythms of Life". Subject is always related to the location. The one under Spiš Castle was built in two weeks in 2008. About 140 people, mostly unemployed inhabitants of the village, participated in its construction.
The geoglyph has really remarkable dimensions - approximately 100x80 meters. It is built of travertine (marble) pieces coming from a nearby quarry called Drevenik. Stones are glued without any fasteners and they make a wall up to 1m high and weight and about 800m long. The total value of the travertine used for the construction of the Celtic Horse reached 330 000 €.
Ku keške: Umiestnenie obrazca ďalej od chodníka a v strede neudržiavaných tráv mu zabezpečilo životnosť. Keďže kamene nie sú nijak prilepené, dosť ľahko sa z múru trúsia. Prosíme Vás preto, aby ste pri návšteve tohto miesta brali do úvahy snahu a prácu ľudí a pri spadnutí nejakých kameňov ich vrátili späť na múr. Kešku sme umiestnili do "vrchu koňovho ucha", čo vidno aj na satelitných mapách. Aby ste sa netrápili, pridávame aj spoiler image.
To the geocache: The location of the geoglyph further away from the pavement and in the middle of unsustainable meadow ensure it’s durability. Since the stones are not glued in any way, they can be easily dropped from the wall. We want to ask you to take into consideration the effort and work of people when visiting this place and return stones to the wall when some of them fall. We placed a cache in the top of the horse's ear, which can also be seen on satellite maps. To avoid misunderstandings, we add a spoiler image.
