Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that – on average – requires 167 service hours. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million in service (based on the national volunteer hour value of $19.51/hr).

This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called “Cache to Eagle” that showcases these special contributions. A Boy Scout can find three of these "Cache to Eagle" caches to satisfy requirement 8(a) for the new Geocaching Merit Badge.

Jim Knick, who is the Eagle Scout that did the project, had an interest in being an EMT when he was a member of the Troop. There had been two large fires in the months preceding Jim's approach to Eagle that had cost the lives of Seattle Firefighters.
Here is an article on the one that inspired Jim to action: Seattle In Mourning for Four Firefighters
Jim decided to memorialize all Seattle Firefighters who had lost their lives in the city's history, protecting Seattle's citizens.
There are seats not pictured, that he fashioned from downed whole logs. And raised about 1,100 dollars for the inscription and permanent monument. I even remember contributing to it as a member of the Troop. He went to service clubs and individuals to raise the money. And he got a SIGNIFICANT discount on the memorial. Thanks to Jim (and Scouting) the sacrifice that those firefighters gave will never be forgotten.
