Access of the Freeway to the Old Hume Highway.
Driving west along a nice country road with cattle and horse properties on either side. There is also remnants of the old railway line that once was used for the Medway Colliery.
During the week the road can be very busy with coal truck heading to Berrima Cement Works.
There are some lovely Bottlebrushes, wattles, fern trees, boronias and squiggle gum trees nearby.
A brief bit of History--
"Berrima Colliery aka Medway Colliery"
Mining commenced in the Medway area, on the banks of the medway rivulet in 1867 at the Cateract Mine. In 1923 W.E.Marsh opened the Loch Catherine Colliery. Men and materials entry was via a flying fox over the Medway Rivulet.
In 1924 the Medway Colliery and Railway Co. was formed to mine coal at the site of the existing Berrima Colliery. A rail spur from Medway to Moss Vale was constructed and in 1926 the Medway village was developed.
In 1926 the Southern Portland Cement and Coal Co. was formed to construct a cement works south of Berrima,
The Berrima Mine was mechanised in 1968 with the introduction of a continuous miner and shuttle cars .
Blue Cirle Southern was formed in 1974 as a joint venture between BHP and Blue Circle, IN 1988 Blue Circle Southern was sold to Boral.
NSW mines are usually subject to faults, elevated stresses, gas, rolls and ingeous intrusions. The only proplems experienced by Berrima Colliery are igeneous intrusions in the form of dykes and volcanic plugs.
The mine currently has around 22 employees, producing an average of 200,000 tonees (at 32% ash) per annum for use in the nearby Berrima Cements Works.
The cache has the usual bits and pieces in it. Log, pen and goodies.
Please make sure it is cover well.
