Built in 1888 this beautiful old country store building was the traveling home of Devil Anse Hatfield.
Once owned by his niece, the bed in the upstairs of the home remains today where he would stop to rest on his journey between home and the Tug Fork River.
Be sure and go inside what is now known as Goldie's Hardware and tell her you want to see the full tour. She will glady show you not only the bed but many treasures she has crammed into every single possible spot inside the operating local hardware store. This is not lowes. There are no cash registers. There are no intercoms. There are no electric lights. Goldie will draw out her flashlight, smack it two or three times on the back to get the batteries in play and use it to guide you into the darkness of the rooms filled with treasures that she isn't even aware of yet. More often than not if you say "Goldie, what's in that box" her answer will be "Oh, I don't know, I haven't ever looked in the 25 odd years I have been here".
Her husband sits behind the counter and tells stories that you can not help but giggle at. A somewhat frail older gentleman with a handmade walking stick and a poke of tobacco in his jaw. If you ask him for a link he won't say "www." because they don't even own a computer. But before you know what has happened he will be on his feet headed to the exact right spot in front of the exact right drawer and pull out a link to fit whatever project he had in his mind when he heard the word.
The two of them are a treasure all on their own without the contents of the building where they reside. But luckily they are like most county folk....Friendly and Hospitable and ready to welcome a stranger.
