In the village Drangsnes stands the magnificient troll, Kerlingin, next to the swimming pool. She has something waiting for you.
Centuries ago three night-troll decided to seperate The Westfjords from the rest of Iceland, by digging a channel from Húnaflói Bay to Breiðafjörður Bay in the west. To make it interesting. They decided to compete in making islands from the earth they shovelled. In the west two of the trolls managed to create the hundreds of islands littering Breiðafjörður, but Húnaflói is much deeper and the single troll could only manage a handful of skerries.
The trolls worked throughout the night until they suddenly realised that dawn was approaching. The trolls in the west ran to the east over the mountains but the sun caught them in Kollafjörður (fjord) where they turned to stones. (See Geocach: GC45PPW.) The troll, standing where the village Drangsnes is today, jumped over Steingrímsfjörður (fjord) and stopped on a rocky peninsula where she left her ox that always followed her. She looked out to the bay, and in anger not having made one island she threw her shovel down. It came down so hard that a part of the cliff broke from the land, with her ox on it, and became Grímsey island. At the same moment the sun rose turning the troll into a rock. She now stands on the shore in Drangsnes, looking at the island and her ox at its northern end.
