Die nordfriesischen
Inseln Amrum, Sylt und Föhr liegen an der Westküste
Schleswig-Holsteins und sind Teil des größten zusammenhängenden
Wattenmeergebietes der Erde!
Das gesamte norddeutsche Wattenmeer steht seit 1991 unter
internationalem Schutz und gilt als Biosphärenreservat der
UNESCO.
Im Juni 2009 ist das Wattenmeer in die UNESCO-Liste des Welterbes
der Menschheit aufgenommen worden.
Geologie:
Erdgeschichtlich gesehen ist Amrum noch eine junge Insel. Erst vor
etwa 200000 Jahren, in der Saaleeiszeit, entstand aus den
Ablagerungen eiszeitlicher Gletscher der heutige Inselkern Amrums.
Der bis zu 18 m hohe Geestrücken bildet damit das "Rückgrat" der
heutigen Insel. Die Dünen wurden erst im 14. - 18 Jahrhundert
aufgeweht. Der Kniepsand ist eine geologisch eigenständige
Sandbank. Momentan hat es allerdings den Anschein, er gehöre zur
Insel, da er mit Amrum seit dem 18. Jahrhundert eine Einheit
bildet. In früheren Zeiten war er aber eine eigenständig im Meer
liegende Sandbank. Derzeit wandert der Kniepsand etwa 50 m pro Jahr
an der Insel entlang nach Norden. Die Sandbank ragt etwa einen
Meter über das mittlere Hochwasser hinaus und wird nur in
Ausnahmefällen, z. B. bei Stürmen überspült.
Geschichte:
Die Inseln und Halligen sind im Verlauf der Jahrhunderte aus
größeren, mehr zusammenhängenden Landmassen entstanden, die durch
Sturmfluten auseinander gerissen wurden.
1585 wurde der Kniepsand auf einer Seekarte erwähnt und lag damals
annähernd im rechten Winkel zur Insel Amrum. Bis Mitte der 1960er
Jahre war der Kniepsand durch einen Priel von der Insel getrennt.
Bis etwa 1940 befand sich dort nördlich von Norddorf der
Kniephafen, von dem Passagierschiffe nach Hörnum auf Sylt fuhren.
Er wurde wegen Versandung des Priels mehrmals nach Norden verlegt
und schließlich aufgegeben.
Im Winter wird der Kniepsand regelmäßig von hohen Sturmfluten
überspült. Dabei werden häufig die im Sommerhalbjahr entstandenen
Primärdünen abgetragen. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde ein Abzweig
der Amrumer Inselbahn von Wittdün durch die Dünen bis über den
Kniepsand gebaut, doch die Schienen und Badegebäude wurden gleich
von der ersten Sturmflut im Winter vernichtet. Die Strecke wurde
mehrfach wieder aufgebaut und schließlich aufgegeben.
Kniepsand heute:
Derzeit bildet der Kniepsand einen scheinbar zu Amrum gehörenden,
15 Kilometer langen und bis zu 1,5 Kilometer breiten Sandstrand,
der der gesamten Westküste der Insel vorgelagert ist und
unmittelbar in die tatsächlich zu Amrum gehörenden Sanddünen
übergeht. Dieser einzigartige Strand liegt durchschnittlich 1 Meter
über Normalnull und bleibt demnach bei normalem Hochwasser trocken.
Seewärts von Wittdün bildet der Kniepsand einen flachen
Wassereinstieg, der sich auch für Kleinkinder sehr gut
eignet.
Im Laufe der nächsten Jahrhunderte wird ein Weiterwandern des
Kniepsandes um die Nordspitze Amrums, die Amrumer Odde, herum
erwartet. Der Kniepsand fungiert als natürlicher Inselschutz bei
Sturmfluten und liefert reichlich Sand für den Aufbau des sich
anschließenden Dünengürtels.

The North Frisian
Islands Amrum, Sylt and Fohr are located on the west coast of
Schleswig-Holstein and are part of the largest contiguous Wadden
Sea area of the earth!
The entire northern German Wadden Sea is under international
protection since 1991 and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
In June 2009, the Wadden Sea has been added in the UNESCO list of
world heritage of mankind.
Geology:
Geologically seen Amrum is still a young island. Only about 200,000
years ago, in the Saale ice age, arose the island today's core of
Amrum from the deposits of Ice Age glaciers. The high ridge of up
to 18 m thus forms the "backbone" of the island today. The dunes
were created in the 14th - 18th century.
The Kniepsand is a geologically separate sand bank. Currently it
has the impression that he belonged to the island, as it is (since
the 18th century) one entity with the island Amrum. In earlier
times it was an independent sand bank in the sea. Currently, the
Kniepsand moves about 50 m per year along the island to the north.
The sand bank extends out approximately one meter above the mean
high water level and is submerged only in exceptional cases, such
as storms.
History:
The islands and islets have been created over the centuries from
larger, more contiguous land masses that were torn apart by tidal
waves.
1585 was the Kniepsand mentioned on a nautical chart and at that
time the Kniepsand was almost at a right angle to the island Amrum.
Until the mid-1960s, the Kniepsand was separated by a tidal creek
on the island. Until about 1940 there was north of the village
Norddorf the Port Kniep, from which the passenger ships went to
Hörnum on Sylt. Due to silting the channel was moved several times
to the north and eventually abandoned.
In winter, the Kniepsand is flooded regularly by high storm surges.
The primary dunes created in the summer months were frequently be
removed. At the end of the 19th Century, was build a branch of the
Amrumer island railway from Wittdün through the dunes to the
Kniepsand, but the rails and bath house were destroyed immediately
by the first storm in the winter. The line was rebuilt several
times and finally abandoned.
Kniepsand today:
Currently, the Kniepsand, seemingly belonging to Amrum, is 15 km
long and up to 1.5 km wide sandy beach, the entire west coast of
the island is upstream and immediately moving on to the fact Amrum
associated sand dunes. This unique beach is an average of 1 meter
above sea level and therefore remains dry under normal floods.
Seaward of the Kniepsand Wittdün is a shallow water entry, which is
very well suitable for small children.
Over the next few centuries it is expected that the Kniepsand moves
north onward the northern tip, the Amrumer Odde. The Kniepsand acts
as a natural island protection from storm surges and provides
plenty of sand for the construction of the adjacent dunes.
