Geocache Description:

Quick park and grab. The container is a 35mm case with log only.

Located in a residential neighborhood so use some stealth. Shouldn't be too busy.

Between 1,000 B.C. and 200 A.D., Athens County was home to the Adena Indians, a prehistoric hunter gatherer society that preceded the Hopewells and other Native-American cultures. The Plains, just north of Athens in Athens County, was the second largest center of Adena activity in Ohio and when white settlers arrived in the 1800s they found at least 30 mounds there.

Over the years most of the mounds have been destroyed. Excavations of the mounds have unearthed pottery, jewelry and tools.

This mound is called Connett Mound. It is sixteen feet high and 85 feet in diameter, this mound has two cremations, found by Professor E. B. Andrews in the 1870s while tunneling into the center. One was placed on bark, a typical Adena trait. With the other cremation were found two copper plates and a stone tube made of limestone, according to Clarence Matheny in "Mounds of Athens County".
