Geocache Description:

Dannebrog - the Danish Flag

Legend says that the Danish flag fell down from heaven during a battle in Lyndanisse on 15 June 1219. Lyndanisse is known as Tallinn today.
The battle took place during a crusade where Scandinavia and Germany together tried to Christianize the Estonian people.
The German crusaders went into Lithuania and the southern part of Estonia and the Danes tried to enter the Nordic part from the sea.
The Danish army was big and the Estonians could not resist. They were forced to give up Tallinn.
Local tribes agreed to be Christians and the Danish King Valdemar Sejr gave them gifts before they left Tallinn.

Three days later, the leaders of the tribe returned with a large army and attacked the Danes during the night.
Many were killed while they were sleeping. The next morning only a small group of Danes had survived, including King Valdemar.
The Estonians suddenly attacked his tent, but instead of the King, bishop Teoderiks was killed.
The battle was bloody and the Danes prayed to God to help them.
Suddenly a red flag with a white cross fell down from heaven onto the battlefield. The Danes saw this as a sign from God and this gave them the strength they needed to win the battle.
The Danes built a church named Toompea and bishop Andreas Sunesen was the first Danish commander in Tallinn.

The cache is hidden at the memorial that was built to remember this battle. The monument is an knight made of iron.

Interestingly, Tallin was originally spelled Taani Linn and means "Danish town".
Before Dannebrog Denmark had a flag called the Raven Flag. The flag had two ravens eating a human bone. There was one raven on each side of the flag and their names were Hugin and Munin. The birds belonged to the Nordic god Odin.

When the ravens on the flag flapped their wings, the Danes believed it promised victory for them in times of war.
