Geocache Description:

Welcome to the famous Tehachapi Treasure cache. Located near one of America's most notable railroad engineering accomplishments, the Tehachapi Treasure exposes geocachers to a challenging hunt while allowing the opportunity for some interesting sightseeing. The overall terrain is somewhat mountainous, but the cache site can be reached relatively easily with only some minor uphill walking. Keep an eye out for snakes and other wildlife, especially in the summer time.

WARNING: Your travels could take you across heavily traveled railroad tracks owned by the Union Pacific Railroad. Do not loiter or allow children to play near the tracks. Make sure when you cross the tracks, you look both ways, as trains traveling downhill are very quiet and stand a good chance of sneaking up on you! The tracks in this area are usually greasy. Never step on the rails! Also, do not attempt to access this cache by stopping, parking or walking on Highway 58. The CHP will not be too happy. I assure you that you can access the cache site without leaving your car parked on the highway.  PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB ANY FENCES!  STAY OFF PRIVATE PROPERTY!  This cache can be reached without ever needing to climb any fences or travel on any private property. Nobody has been hurt trying to find the Tehachapi Treasure. Don't you be the first. Railroad locomotives are very unforgiving.

The Tehachapi Treasure cache was placed in this area, over 23 years ago, to expose geocachers to the Tehachapi Loop. This cache is one of the oldest and most famous caches on the web. It has even been found by some of the train crews who have made entries in the log books. The "loop" is where the railroad tracks form a circle around a rather large hill or small mountain. When a train of sufficient length negotiates the loop, it will actually cross over itself. All of this is done to mitigate the steep grade as much as possible. The Tehachapi Loop is frequented by train watchers, photographers and railfans from all over the world. Make sure that you explore the "loop" after you find the cache!

The cache is actually housed in an ammo can that was placed inside a blue Rubbermaid plastic container. The blue container(probably gone)helped keep the dirt from filling up the hole when the ammo box is removed.

Your cooperation in returning the cache in good order is appreciated. Please do not litter the cache site. Good luck, happy hunting and thanks for visiting the famous Tehachapi Treasure! Please read the mail thread below about the missing keys. If you are able to recover the lost keys, please let the appropriate person know of your find or email me, westcoastchris. If you plan to visit the Tehachapi Treasure, please consider taking a small spiral notebook to leave in the cache for future visitors to sign and feel free to post pictures on this site of your visit and any trains you may see. Thanks!
